Holika Dahan: Significance and Story

It’s believed that long ago there was a demon king called Hiranyakashipu. His son was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu and his name was Prahlad. The king wanted his people to worship him only. Due to this reason Prahlad’s devotion to Vishnu angered him. 

Hiranyakashipu tried many times to change his son’s beliefs but was unsuccessful. Frustrated and angry with his Prahlad he asked for his sister Holika’s help. She had a special power that made her immune to fire.

Both the king and his sister Holika planned to burn Prahlad alive. They set up a pyre and Holika sat on it with Prahlad thinking she would not be harmed. However, Prahlad came out of the fire unharmed due to his unwavering faith and devotion but Holika died in the flames.

In essence this event celebrates the winning of devotion and faith and the triumph of good over evil. 

Rituals and Customs

The ritual involves a certain practices that include gathering aromatic wood, dried leaves and other forms of offerings to create a pyre. The pyre is lit followed by a traditional aarti for spiritual growth.

Devotees often circle the bonfire while chanting mantras and seeking blessings for prosperity and well being. The bonfire acts as a purifying force removing negativity. Some also tell the tale of Prahlad and Holika and how his devotion and faith defeated evil.

The remaining ashes from the bonfire are considered sacred and collected and applied on foreheads as a form of protection. The end of the ceremony marks the end of winter season and the start of spring.
